WASHINGTON — Thirty-two years after solar panels were removed from the White House’s roof, President Obama is installing new ones.

A White House official said the administration started installing “American made” solar panels on the First Family’s residence this week in a so-called energy retrofit that also includes better temperature controls and variable speed fans to save power.

It is part of an administration bid to “lead by example” by cutting federal energy use.

“The project will help demonstrate that historic buildings can incorporate solar energy and energy efficiency upgrades,” the official said.

Former President Jimmy Carter had solar panels put on the White House after his 1976 election, but Ronald Reagan had them removed in 1981.
