In a special meeting Wednesday night, the Waynesboro School Board named Leola Burks as the new principal for Berkeley Glenn Elementary School.

For the past four years, Burks served as assistant principal at Westwood Hills Elementary School. Before that, she worked as a band and 8th grade choir teacher, as well as assistant principal at Kate Collins Middle School.

By taking over at Berkeley Glenn, Burks will be returning to the spot her career in Waynesboro began. In 1996, she was hired as an elementary music teacher at the school.

“Mrs. Burks’ leadership style will provide a perfect dimension to Berkeley Glenn Elementary School,” Waynesboro Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeff Cassell said. “In her previous roles, she has established positive relationships with faculty, students and parents. Her high energy, organizational skills, and self-motivation will contribute to her ability to have a positive impact as a leader for Berkeley Glenn Elementary School.”

Burks has a bachelor of science in music from Radford University and a master’s in education from James Madison University. She and her husband Robert live in Waynesboro. Two of their three children graduated from Waynesboro High and the third currently attends class there.
