PHOENIX (AP) – Phoenix is ahead of schedule in its effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from city operations.

Officials with the Public Works Department point to a recent report by Arizona State University that shows the city has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 7 percent.

In 2008, the City Council had adopted a goal to reduce emissions to 5 percent below 2005 levels by 2015. In 2005, emissions totaled more than 678,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

Mayor Greg Stanton says he’s excited that the city may be able to double or triple emissions reductions by 2015.

City officials say the reductions have come thanks to advanced methane capture systems at city-owned landfills, alternative fuels, energy-efficient streetlights and traffic signals and various city solar power projects.
