Robert Oxley, its campaign director, said: “Ridiculous renewable targets and the green levies put in place in an attempt to achieve them are forcing up energy bills. It’s time to axe these green subsidies to ease the pressure on those feeling the pinch.”

The average annual dual fuel energy bill is currently £1,315 – which includes green and social charges of £115. Environmental campaigners also attacked the measures, saying they would do little to tackle climate change.

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey said the 2030 proposals were ambitious. “This is a really good package. The fact that the Commission is proposing a 40 per cent greenhouse gas reduction is a step forward.

“The Coalition Government has wanted to make sure we go green but we do it at the lowest possible cost.”
