An international conference on Solar Energy Photovoltaic organised by the School of Electronics Engineering of the KIIT University, was inaugurated by Minister of Energy Arun Kumar Sahu at the university here on Wednesday.

Sahu said that as generation of solar energy is expensive, scientists and researchers should try hard to make it affordable. Renewable energy sources like solar energy have great importance as they are not finite like natural fuels such as coal and petroleum. In order to promote renewable sources of energy, the State Government has decided to establish a Green Energy Development Corporation soon, he informed.

In his presidential address, KIIT University Vice-Chancellor Prof PP Mathur said that presently, India as well as other countries need energy security, which only solar energy can provide. Prof AK Beura of the Bengal Engineering and Science University, who was among the keynote speakers, said there should be networking to make solar energy technology successful. There is a need to speed up the development of appropriate technology, he said.

The conference, which covered the entire spectrum of photovoltaics from materials to systems, had a special session on “Plasmonics and Nanostructured Solar Cells” on Thursday.

Delegates from aboard including the Netherlands, Estonia, Australia, Switzerland and the USA participated in the conference.
