Legislation that was signed into law Saturday in Illinois calls for the state to invest up to $30 million in solar energy to help meet the state’s energy needs.

The law, which went into effect immediately, requires the Illinois Power Agency to buy solar power as part of the state’s energy mix, the Associated Press reports. Funds for the purchases come from the agency’s Renewable Energy Resources Fund, which is comprised of the clean energy fees paid by power suppliers.
