A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Wednesday to dedicate Prairie Breeze, a 200-megawatt wind farm near Elgin in northeast Nebraska.

About 65 guests including Gov. Dave Heineman and representatives from the Omaha Public Power District attended the event, said utility spokesperson Paula Lukowski.

The new wind farm began commercial operations in May and OPPD is buying all of the electricity generated by the wind farm.

Operated by Invenergy Wind, headquartered in Chicago, Prairie Breeze is a 118-turbine project, stretching over 26,000 acres in Antelope, Boone and Madison counties.

In addition to Prairie Breeze, OPPD plans to add 45 megawatts of wind generation from the Broken Bow II wind farm in Custer County later this year.

The Omaha-based district also has plans to add 400 megawatts of wind energy from Grand Prairie wind farm, which is currently under development near O’Neill.
