Recently, I noticed a group of six wind turbines northwest of Lake Mendota visible from the isthmus. Who operates them?

Epic Systems of Verona built the turbines along Kickaboo Road, near Highway 12 in the town of Springfield, in 2012.

Each of the six 262-foot towers is equipped with three 135-foot blades.

The turbines, which have a 9.9-megawatt capacity, originally operated at only a fraction of their potential energy production because company officials didn’t know Madison Gas Electric would need to upgrade its equipment in order to accept power from the array.

MGE spokesman Steve Kraus said the utility helped develop the necessary substations and lines to receive the power and said the turbines have been connected to the grid since September.
