COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio Gov. John Kasich (KAY’-sik) has signed a contentious bill delaying the phase-in of Ohio’s renewable energy and efficiency targets and repealing advanced energy mandates the state put in place in 2008.

The Republican governor’s signing of the bill Friday drew criticism from scientists, advanced-energy businesses, environmentalists, and faith leaders.

The Ohio Chamber of Commerce and other business groups, utilities and industrial electric customers supported the move.

The new law puts a two-year hold on renewables targets in a compromise Kasich backed to avoid a full repeal. The thresholds would resume in 2017 if the state Legislature fails to act on a study panel’s recommendations.

The 2008 law required energy companies to sell a combined 25 percent of electricity produced from renewable and advanced sources by 2025.
