A downtown Springfield restaurant is enhancing its “green” initiative.

In the next couple of weeks, Maldaner’s will have an official “green rooftop.” There’s already a garden and honey bees, but the next step calls for solar panels.

Owner Michael Higgins said the facility will see a savings of about 20 percent on its energy bill, starting next year. He said the educational aspect is a major reason why he decided to go green.

“You would be surprised at the colleges and the universities that have visited this rooftop over the years,” Higgins said. “This will make it even more so.”

More than 50 solar panels will be installed through a grant through Illinois Green Economic Network.

Lincoln Land Community College students will use the green roof for their renewable energy classes. Plants from the rooftop’s garden are already used for education and as ingredients for the restaurant.Maldaner’s Goes Green
