MICHIGAN CITY — The Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) has announced the launch of a new pilot program that allows customers to designate a portion or total of their monthly electric use to power generated by renewable energy sources.

The program, which is available to all NIPSCO electric customers, allows residential customers to designate 25, 50 or 100 percent of their monthly electric energy use to renewable energy sources, and it allows industrial and commercial customers the additional option of contributing lesser amounts of 5 and 10 percent. All customers can change their participation level – or cancel – at any time without fees.

Participating customers pay a monthly premium in addition to NIPSCO’s standard electric rate, and the added costs are passed directly to customers, with no mark up or financial return for NIPSCO; non-participating customers are not responsible for charges associated with making this program available.

NIPSCO’s green power rate is $0.002163 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). For an average monthly electric use of 1,000 kWh, customers can expect to pay $0.54 extra per month for 25 percent of their energy use to be attributed to renewable sources; for 50 percent, they can expect to pay roughly $1.08 extra per month, and for 100 percent, they expect to pay an additional $2.16.

The program, which has been reviewed by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) and approved by Green-e Climate, a national renewable energy certification program, works by purchasing some its energy supply from renewable sources and feeding that energy into NIPSCO’s general “energy pool.”

“Every company that generates power…they have a certain amount of power that they generate themselves, and oftentimes, they’ll also buy from other sources,” Katherine Szot, a spokesperson for NIPSCO said. “NIPSCO’s purchase of this renewable energy supports the development of renewable energy by supporting those companies and continuing to grow our investment in it.”

NIPSCO has earmarked the end date for the trial program as Dec. 31, 2014. If successful, the program will continue.
