Offshore wind energy is right for Maryland

I applaud Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller’s courageous stand for the planet and for the creation of good construction jobs as shown by his willingness to change the composition of the Senate Finance Committee if necessary in order to get the issue of building offshore wind farms before the full Senate (“Offshore wind gets boost in Annapolis.” Dec. 11).

Many Marylanders in coastal areas are vulnerable to rising sea levels and intense storms. Recent plant closings in Baltimore have hurt Maryland workers. Building offshore wind turbines will provide good manufacturing, electrical and construction jobs for Marylanders who will be needed for this local work.

This is especially important since the recent closing of the Sparrows Point steel mill and the loss of thousands of jobs there. We could see a reawakening of manufacturing in Maryland if we encourage the development of offshore wind. This is a win-win for the environment and the state’s economy.
