Scenes from a potential 51st state

In Colorado, 11 rural counties are deciding whether to form a new state. Ten of the counties are in eastern Colorado; the 11th is in the state’s far northwestern corner. The 51st State Initiative, on Tuesday’s mail-in ballot, reflects a growing resentment among rural residents who feel ignored in an increasingly urban state. America Tonight’s Chris Bury discussed the secession issue with citizens at a popular roadside diner in Cheyenne Wells, a small town in the eastern part of the state.

People in favor of secession cite differences with more populous and liberal areas of the state over same-sex marriage, recreational marijuana, firearm restrictions and a mandate to use more renewable energy, which costs much more than coal.
