JOHN DAY – Paul Scheckel, author known for “walking the talk” about alternative energy and conservation, will be the keynote speaker at the SolWest Renewable Energy Fair.

The fair is set for July 26-28 at the Grant County Fairgrounds, and also will feature workshops on solar hot water and solar electric, exhibitors, demonstrations, activities and a swap meet.

Scheckel will speak at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, July 27, in the Sale Barn.

Scheckel, who believes the energy revolution starts with the individual, lives with his family in a Vermont home energized by wind, sun, wood, and vegetable oil.

He is the author of “The Homeowner’s Energy Handbook (Your Guide to Getting off the Grid),” and “The Home Energy Diet” and writes a column on energy and the environment. He also has appeared on the TV show “Ask This Old House.”

At SolWest, he will share stories and tips gleaned from more than 20 years as an energy auditor, consultant, renewable energy system installer, electric car converter and hands-on off-grid homesteader. He also will teach a hands-on class about making your own biogas.
