Support net metering for green energy

I am urging support for the coming bill sponsored by Sen. Jason Frerichs and Dakota Rural Action to bring net metering to South Dakota. Net metering is a policy whereby individuals who produce “green energy” (wind or solar power) would be reimbursed by the electric utility at the same rate as they are charged.

Currently, some rural electric co-operatives pay 4.6 cents per kilowatt produced, others pay 3.5 cents per kilowatt while Northwestern Energy pays 1.7 cents per kilowatt.  Net metering could correct this discrepancy in a fair manner.

Our country’s future depends on the production of green energy to be less dependent on fossil fuels. The South Dakota Legislature needs to support green energy production by enacting net metering. Net metering would encourage individuals to develop either small wind (4 kilowatt) or solar energy.

I support this legislation because it would be a step to lessen our dependence on our fast-disappearing fossil fuels. Net metering would also make small energy production a more profitable venture for individuals in South Dakota.
