Three companies with Colorado operations are teaming up to build a North Dakota wind farm named Border Winds.

Vestas Wind Systems, the Danish wind turbine manufacturer with four plants in Colorado, said Friday that it’s landed a contract to build 62 of its V100-2.0 megawatt wind turbines for the project.

Broomfield’s RES Americas is the developer of the Border Winds wind farm in Rolette County in north central North Dakota, near the Canadian border.

And when the project is complete, RES Americas will transfer ownership of the Border Winds power station to Xcel Energy Inc., which is based in Minneapolis and also is Colorado’s biggest provider of electricity and natural gas.

Vestas said it expects to deliver the turbines for the Border Winds project in the third quarter of 2015; commissioning of the turbines is expected to take place before the end of 2015.

Vestas said its Colorado factories are expected to be involved in the manufacture of the turbines’ nacelles, blades and towers.

The Border Winds wind farm is expected to generate 150 megawatts of power. The order represents about 124 megawatts of power.

RES ordered turbines for the remaining 26 megawatts of power in September 2013, when the company signed a master-supply agreement with Vestas for the manufacture and delivery of up to 610 megawatts worth of turbines, Vestas said in its announcement.

Vestas said of the 610 megawatts involved in the master-supply agreement with RES, Vestas has locked in 444 megawatts of actual orders either directly from RES or from other companies that bought RES’s projects and then placed an order for the turbines with Vestas.
