WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) — Westerly’s town council has shelved plans to build two wind turbines there.
The Westerly Sun reports the council decided not to act this week on a proposed energy-purchase agreement with Wind Energy Development LLC of North Kingstown.
The decision came after a meeting in which residents living near the proposed site of the turbines expressed concerns over the project, which also would need state approval.
The plan had called for two 420-foot turbines, which officials said would power all the town’s municipal buildings, except the schools.
The company said it could save the town $14 million or more over the course of a 20-year lease.
