After a promise was made three years ago, the White House is finally getting solar panels.

Installation work began this week, the Washington Post first reported, and is “a part of an energy retrofit that will improve the overall energy efficiency of the building.” An official told the Associated Press the panels are American-made.

Solar panels were first installed on the first family’s residence by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. They were removed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981 because he reportedly “felt that the equipment was just a joke.” The Obama administration announced plans to replace the panels in 2010, with an original completion date of spring 2011. Better late than never.
