BISMARCK, N.D.  — Lt. Gov. Drew Wrigley says North Dakota has about 1,600 megawatts of power generated from wind turbines.

Wrigley says amount of wind power has spiked with the addition of new turbines that have been placed in south central North Dakota by Allete (ah-LEET’) Inc.

Since 2010, the company has installed 101 turbines that produce 292 megawatts of electricity. A megawatt is roughly enough electricity to power 1,000 homes.

Wind farms began expanding in North Dakota in the past decade.

The Washington, D.C.-based American Wind Energy Association rates North Dakota as having the nation’s greatest wind energy potential.
